Southeastern Grocers, the parent company of both supermarket brands, opened a Fresco y Más location Wednesday at 6775 Taft Street in Hollywood, formerly occupied by a Winn-Dixie store.
Ian McLeod, CEO of Southeastern Grocers, told the Sun-Sentinel that the company decided to expand the Fresco y Más chain in Broward after its successful entry into Miami-Dade County, where the chain caters to Hispanic customers at 16 locations.
The new Fresco y Más store in Hollywood features a full-service butcher shop and an in-store cafeteria that serves family-style meals made from scratch.
Fresco y Más is yet another new rival of dominant Publix Super Markets, which operates a Hollywood store one block west of the new Fresco y Más location.
Earlier this year, the Tampa Bay Times reported that Lakeland-based Publix gradually has lost market share to Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe’s, The Fresh Market and to other grocers that entered Florida more recently, including Lucky’s Market and Sprouts Farmers Market. [Sun-Sentinel] – Mike Seemuth
